ABOUT OUR CLASSROOM
TEACHING STYLE
I like to try different techniques in my classroom to help my students learn and become
engaged. Some of these techniques are giving students a chance to be creative
during lessons, or having dance breaks so students have the opportunity to move.
Movement while learning is closely linked to better retention of information. I think it's
important for my students to feel comfortable in their classroom environment. I believe
this to be a crucial part of the learning process. I encourage risk and applaud bravery in
regards to classroom participation. Students should be allowed to make mistakes without
fear, we all make mistakes. It's what we do with them that counts and this is what I try
to instill in each student. I expect respect not only towards myself and all adults they
encounter but also their peers. I teach with the intention of building their minds while
also encouraging positive social behaviors that will help them develop relationships and
prepare them for the future.
GROUPING STUDENTS
Students are grouped in order to address each child's needs in the best possible way.
Grouping is changed on a continuous bases according to each child's capabilities and/or
level during a particular topic. Every child has strengths and weaknesses and this changes
throughout the year. Please remember to encourage your child and build their confidence.
If they are struggling, it is not a reflection of their intelligence. It is a need for support and
guidance through that which they are struggling with. Please remember this, you are
your child's biggest advocate, their biggest cheerleader. Encouragement and believing
in them is critical to their growth as a student.

How to help your child have a successful school year.
Homework Folder/Planner - Students will be writing their homework, project due dates, upcoming events and exam dates in
their planners. Please check your child's planner daily, to ensure your child is doing the required homework for the day.
understand many parents work long hours and are not able to aid their children with homework every night. I try to be conscious
of everyones situation. Therefore, the homework I do assign is done so with purpose and to reinforce what they’ve learned in the
classroom. I ask that all homework is completed and submitted on time. A note is required if there is an emergency that impeded
your child from completing their homework, otherwise they will receive a 0. If homework is missed often, you will receive a letter
from me indicating the homework that wasn’t turned in.
Classroom Exams - Students will have exams after each unit of every subject. It is important that they study in bits and pieces as
opposed to cramming a day or two before. Long term studying is more effective than cramming.
Snack - Students have lunch at 12:30 pm, because it is late in the day I like for the kids to have a snack between 9:50-10:15am.
Please provide your child with a healthy snack to carry them through till lunch time. It is difficult for a child to concentrate if they are
hungry.
Grades - Grades per term are wholistic, meaning all things are taken into consideration.
* Attendance * Behavior * Homework * Exam Scores * Projects * Group Work * Participation * Effort * In class responses
Behavior - Students are encouraged to behave respectfully towards adults as well as their peers. It is important that they understand
how to treat others and are expected to make decisions that will impact others lives in a positive way. It is important that they create
for themselves, an environment that is enriching, positive and encouraging.
Book Log - Students are to read for 30 min EVERY night and log it in their book log sheet. I will be collecting the sheets in the middle
of the school year and also at the end of the school year. The 2 students that read the most will be taken out for pizza during their lunch
period.
Translators for meetings - If there is a language barrier please let me know and I will make my best effort to find someone to
translate for you.

- but the school community as well.

Studying practices that can be implemented at home.
I recommend asking them questions like these to help them progress throughout the year.
Asking these question will not only help your child with reading comprehension, it will also help
them become more comfortable with explaining and summarizing what they've read.
What is the main/big idea?
* Who is the main character?
* What is the setting?
* What is the plot? What was the conflict and how was it solved?
* Can you infer what will happen next?
* What do you think are the characters traits and motives?
* Discuss the vocabulary. Ask them if there were any words they found that were difficult to
pronounce or define.
* Talk about cause and effect.
* Have your child compare and contrast two stories he or she has read.
* Have them tell you about what they just read. Doing so will help them become more comfortable
with summarizing text.
Below are some questions you can ask your child while working through math problems
during homework.
* Can you explain how you got your answer?
* Does your answer seem reasonable?
* Could you explain how you solved it?
* What could you do differently to solve this?
* What DO you understand?
* What information can you use to solve this?
* Could you solve it a different way?
* Could you teach me what you just did?
